The Man Effect

Masculinity coaching and why men should consider hiring a life coach.

The Story

I had just watched one of my close friends go through a painful divorce and could not fathom how he was still holding on. We regularly talked throughout the process, and I watched him keep pushing and not give up. Later on, when I was thinking and reflecting on this painful experience he was going through I suddenly remembered, he had hired a life coach and spoke so highly of him.

I remember thinking how cynical I was of the term "life coach" and how I felt I knew my judgments were accurate.

YET... I was stuck in my own life, desperate, and needed something to change. So, I decided to hire this "coach" and make myself a test rabbit to see if this life coach stuff worked. Well, did it work? Yep, you guessed it, it did...

Within months my life trajectory was entirely altered, and I was full-on pursuing my dreams. It was a bizarre feeling to have everything change so smoothly yet quickly. It is true and I know the journey is different for everyone, but this was a fantastic process for me.

What happened to cause that transformation?

I was asked questions that pierced my defense mechanisms and exposed the lies I wanted to believe about my reality. So, what does this have to do with masculinity coaching?

Everything.

You see, I have decided to focus in on and develop tools and methods to specifically help men. Sure, women could benefit from the exercises as well, but they are tailored for men.

Masculinity coaching is just a way of me saying I have decided to target men to help them grow and develop into better human beings.

Being a man in today's day and age has all sorts of different meanings and interpretations, and I in no way am out to change everyone's mind. To get a better idea of my opinion on masculinity check out this link, "Masculinities Definition" or this article, “What is masculinity? That's a question every man should be asking himself.

Anyway, here is the thing, you are probably asking yourself why am I using the term "Masculinity Coaching?" Well, because it is my desire to help equip and uplift men to feel more centered and whole. So I thought why not call it masculinity coaching! It is literally that simple.

It is a way for me to express that I want to help men overcome adversity and rise to the occasion, to feel that someone has their back and will push them to new limits. A way for men to know that I have developed tools and exercises to specifically help them confront their fears.

That being said I thought I would highlight four reasons why anyone should hire a coach at some point in their life.

+ You feel stuck in life.

Everyone has had those moments in life where you feel stuck or trapped. It is not an uncommon feeling or experience.

Snagging the right life coach can help you get an outside perspective to see what can be done to break free and start gaining momentum again.

They may make you do some exercises or ask some questions to help you realize the power that you carry in the situation. It makes me think of a child who does not know how to swim that is in the shallow end of a pool. They are splashing and freaking out because they believe drowning is inevitable. Yet, with some proper guidance from a parent or other adult the knowledge that this child can just stand up transforms its reality instantly.

Life coaches have a sneaky ninja way of doing the same thing, you think life is about to end, and BAM they tell you just to stand up.

+ Get outside of your head.

If you are anything like me, you know what it is like to be entrenched deeply in the realm of your intellect. When pondering many issues and struggles in life, it is easy to get entrapped within one's brain.

I have learned that a great way to get outside of my head is to talk with someone who is more experienced and able to have a perspective not influenced by my circumstances.

A good friend can be helpful for this as well, but I have found that coaches and therapists have a great way of observing cycles and beliefs that standard friends may not see.

+ The desire for change.

Have you ever just woken up one day and realized that you do not like where you are at in life? Your job is mediocre; your friends are decent, and you don't feel depressed, but you also do not feel happy.

This is what I like to call living purgatory, a place where everything is just, "meh."

Hiring a coach is a great way to break you out of that funk.

+ Help set you up for success.

Back when I was in high school, I played on the basketball team. I was dreadful, but enjoyed the challenge of learning and growing at a sport.

The thing was, my coach was the guy who set my team and I up for success but pushing us through drills and exercises that we did not necessarily like. He would run us until we were dog tired.

BUT... this set us up for success when we got on the court. Now we were not the best team out there by any means, but my coach was able to equip some young men who were unskilled to be able to hold their own on the court.

A life coach is very similar in my opinion; they see who you are and what your desires are. Then, they push you to become the best you possible. YET you still have to do the work.
